A 16-year-old boy has been charged with murder following the discovery of human remains in regional Victoria. Detectives from the Missing Persons Squad confirmed the charge on Saturday evening, marking a significant development in the investigation into the death of 13-year-old Layla Jeffery.
Layla, a high school student who had been reported missing on July 5, was last seen on McCracken Street in the small town of Donald. Her remains were located by police in bushland west of Byrne Street late Thursday afternoon after an extensive search operation involving the dog squad, air wing, and search and rescue teams.
Detective Inspector Dave Dunstan stated that the 16-year-old suspect was known to both the victim and local police. Authorities also confirmed that two women, a 53-year-old from Donald and a 55-year-old from Melbourne, are currently assisting with inquiries. Police have indicated they do not believe the victim's family was involved in the incident.
The tight-knit community of Donald, which has a population of approximately 1,500, has been deeply affected by the tragedy. Residents have expressed their grief and support for the Jeffery family as the town grapples with the loss of the teenager, who was described by locals as a quiet and gentle girl.
The accused youth is expected to appear before a children's court for a remand hearing. As the legal process begins, investigators continue to work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the death, with police noting that the investigation remains ongoing.
