Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has announced the dismissal of Defence Minister Oleksii Reznikov, marking a significant leadership change during the ongoing conflict with Russia. Reznikov, who served for over 550 days since the start of the full-scale invasion, played a central role in coordinating international military aid and maintaining relationships with Western allies. The president stated that the ministry requires new approaches and different formats of interaction with both the military and the broader public.
Zelenskyy has nominated Rustem Umerov, the former head of the State Property Fund of Ukraine, to succeed Reznikov. Umerov, a politician of Crimean Tatar origin, is expected to bring a fresh perspective to the role as the government seeks to streamline its defense operations. The change comes as part of a broader effort by the Ukrainian administration to address internal management issues and maintain public trust during the war.
Throughout his tenure, Reznikov was widely recognized for his diplomatic efforts in securing heavy weaponry from international partners. However, his time in office was also marked by scrutiny regarding procurement processes within the Ministry of Defence. Reports of inflated costs for supplies, including food and clothing for soldiers, led to increased pressure on the government to demonstrate accountability and transparency.
This leadership transition is expected to be finalized following a vote in the Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine's parliament. While the move signals a shift in the administration's internal strategy, officials have indicated that the core objectives of the defense ministry remain unchanged.
