2026 Census: What you need to know to ensure you’re counted

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) will run the 2026 Census on the night of August 10, 2026. This nationwide count of every person and household is required by law, and participation is mandatory. For the first time, the ABS is encouraging most people to complete the census online using a unique login code mailed to each address. Paper forms will still be available for those who need them. The census collects information on age, sex, income, ancestry, and housing, among other topics. The data helps governments, businesses, and community groups plan services such as schools, hospitals, and transport. ABS officials stress that personal information is protected by strict privacy laws and is kept separate from other government records. Refusing to complete the census can result in fines of up to $222 per day. The ABS has launched a public awareness campaign to help first-time participants and those in remote or vulnerable communities. People living in shared accommodation, temporary housing, or overseas on census night are still required to be counted. Special arrangements are available for people experiencing homelessness or those with accessibility needs. The 2026 census will also include new questions on long-term health conditions and sexual orientation, following consultation with community groups. The ABS says the changes reflect Australia's evolving demographics and aim to produce more inclusive data.
