Australia's 2026 Census is set for August 11, 2026, with significant updates to its structure and content. The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has introduced new questions on gender identity, sexual orientation, and transportation methods, aiming to provide a more comprehensive snapshot of the nation's demographics.
The ABS has expanded the ancestry question, allowing respondents to list up to four ancestries, enhancing the representation of Australia's cultural diversity. Additionally, the census will include questions on sex recorded at birth, current gender identity, and sexual orientation for individuals aged 16 and over, reflecting a commitment to inclusivity. Transportation data collection now encompasses bicycle and e-bike usage for commuting, acknowledging the growing trend of sustainable transport options. The question on the number of children ever born to women has been removed from the 2026 Census, returning to a once-per-decade collection.
To facilitate participation, the ABS is adopting a digital-first approach. Most households will receive instructions to complete the census online, with paper forms available upon request. In areas where a strong preference for paper forms exists, they will be delivered directly to households. The ABS is also offering in-person support in select regions to assist individuals in completing the census form.
The data collected will be released in three phases, starting in June 2027. This phased approach ensures that the information is processed and made available in a timely manner, supporting various sectors in planning and decision-making processes.
