Record-breaking El Niño signals drought and fire risk for spring

Australia is preparing for a challenging spring as a record-setting El Niño event forms in the Pacific Ocean. The Australian Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has officially announced the start of El Niño, forecasting that it could be the strongest ever recorded. This warming trend is expected to cause drier conditions and an increased risk of bushfires nationwide.

El Niño is a natural climate event marked by warmer-than-average sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific. These conditions can disrupt global weather patterns and cause significant effects in different regions. In Australia, El Niño events typically bring reduced rainfall and higher temperatures, increasing drought conditions and fire risks.

The current El Niño is developing quickly, with ocean temperatures in the Niño3.4 region already more than 1°C above the long-term average. This is the fastest warming observed in over 50 years. Although the strength of an El Niño does not always directly correlate with the severity of its impacts, the rapid progression suggests Australia may experience stronger effects this year.

The BOM's seasonal model, ACCESS-S, predicts Pacific Ocean temperatures could rise more than 3°C above normal at this event's peak, exceeding the previous post-1900 maximum of 2.65°C recorded in November 1902. Such significant warming is likely to affect Australia's climate, leading to hotter and drier conditions, particularly in central and eastern areas.

In response, fire and land management agencies are urged to begin seasonal preparedness early. The potential for increased bushfire conditions later this year requires proactive risk-mitigation efforts to protect communities. Additionally, BOM reports that since January 2026, parts of Australia—including northeastern New South Wales, southern Queensland, southern Victoria, western and northern Tasmania, and parts of Western Australia—have experienced drier-than-average conditions.

As the El Niño continues to develop, it is critical for residents and authorities to stay updated through regular BOM and local weather service updates. Preparedness and vigilance will be essential in managing the challenges posed by this unprecedented El Niño event.
