The incident occurred on Saturday evening, April 22, 2023, at Gumeracha Oval. Loiacono was immediately attended to by paramedics and was subsequently flown to the Royal Adelaide Hospital in critical condition. Despite the best efforts of medical staff, he succumbed to his injuries on Sunday afternoon, April 23, 2023.
Loiacono's brother, Jack, described him as "the most respectful, caring, loving and beautiful soul." He fondly remembered Antonio as "the most caring thoughtful person I've come across and always looked out for me."
The Birdwood Football and Netball Club expressed their condolences, stating that Antonio's leadership and care for his new team would have a lasting impact. Hills Football League president Joanne Purdie conveyed the league's deepest sympathy, acknowledging the immense shock and sorrow felt by the community.
