Federal Opposition Leader Angus Taylor has been drawn into the proceedings after evidence was presented regarding his potential involvement as a donor. The inquiry heard testimony and saw messages suggesting that members of the Reformers sought funding from Taylor to support their efforts to recruit members with conservative values. Specifically, a message from the then-chief executive of Catholic Schools NSW, Dallas McInerney, mentioned plans to seek a financial contribution from Taylor. Another witness, former staffer Dylan Whitelaw, was questioned about a message claiming a commitment for a significant donation, though he stated he had no personal recollection of such payments.
Taylor has firmly denied making any payments to the group, stating that he is not a party to the inquiry and that any donations he has made were declared in accordance with electoral rules. He has not been accused of any wrongdoing by the commission. The inquiry has also explored broader allegations, including the creation of disparaging documents, sometimes referred to as 's--t sheets,' used against political opponents within the party.
