Jetstar has announced a major shift in its carry-on baggage policy, moving away from a strict 7kg weight limit to a new, size-based system starting 2 February 2027. Under the updated rules, all economy passengers will receive a free underseat allowance for a small item, such as a laptop bag or backpack, measuring up to 40cm by 30cm by 20cm. This change is designed to simplify the boarding process and reduce the stress often associated with weighing bags at the gate.
Passengers who require additional luggage space will now need to purchase a new 'Priority Carry-on' option. This upgrade allows for a second, larger bag to be stowed in the overhead locker, with dimensions of up to 56cm by 36cm by 23cm. Pricing for this service will start at $25, though costs will vary depending on the specific flight route. Those who purchase this option will also gain the benefit of priority boarding to help secure overhead bin space.
Jetstar CEO Stephanie Tully stated that the decision follows extensive feedback from both customers and crew. The airline noted that the previous practice of weighing bags at the boarding gate was a significant source of frustration for travelers and often caused delays. By focusing on bag dimensions rather than weight, the airline aims to streamline operations and improve on-time performance.
While the strict 7kg weight limit is being removed, the airline still requests that passengers keep their carry-on items to a maximum of 10kg to ensure they can safely lift their own bags into the overhead lockers. The new model brings Jetstar's policy closer to the practices of many international carriers, which prioritize bag size over weight for cabin luggage. The airline expects these changes to create a more predictable and smoother experience for all passengers.
