Meta Platforms Inc., the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has announced plans to construct its first Canadian data centre in Sturgeon County, Alberta. This facility, representing an investment exceeding CAD $13 billion, will be Meta's 33rd data centre globally and its largest outside the United States. The one-gigawatt data centre is optimized for artificial intelligence workloads and is expected to create approximately 3,000 construction jobs at its peak, with over 300 permanent operational positions upon completion. The project is anticipated to generate about $250 million annually for Albertans through royalties, taxes, levies, and fees. Meta is also investing approximately CAD $60 million in local infrastructure improvements, including roads and water systems. The facility will utilize a water-efficient closed-loop, liquid-cooled system with dry cooling, resulting in no operational water use in the cooling system. Meta has been collaborating with local partners to ensure the project aligns with the community's needs and environmental standards.
