Gordie Howe International Bridge opens to traffic

The Gordie Howe International Bridge, a new six-lane crossing over the Detroit River, officially opened to traffic on July 27, 2026. This $6.4 billion Canadian project connects Windsor, Ontario, to Detroit, Michigan, aiming to alleviate congestion and enhance trade between the two nations. The bridge is named after Canadian hockey legend Gordie Howe and is expected to serve as a more cost-effective alternative to the privately owned Ambassador Bridge, which has long been the primary route for commercial trucks between Canada and the U.S. The opening ceremony was marked by symbolic crossings from both sides, including descendants of Gordie Howe and Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer. The bridge is open 24/7 to automobiles, motorcycles, RVs, and semi-trucks, with pedestrian and bicycle access scheduled to begin on August 5.
