The City of Brandon, Manitoba, has declared a state of local emergency in response to anticipated flooding along the Assiniboine and Shellmouth river basins. This proactive measure aims to safeguard residents, critical infrastructure, and property as river levels are forecasted to continue rising, with peak flows expected around July 12.
The decision was made unanimously by the city council during a special meeting on Saturday evening. Mayor Jeff Fawcett emphasized that the declaration is a precautionary step to ensure the city is prepared well before the river reaches its expected peak. He reassured residents that the move should not cause alarm, stating, "For almost the entirety of the city, there’s really no impact. This is all about the river and ensuring we can do the necessary dike work." A morning shower is possible, followed by a thunderstorm in the afternoon. Residents are advised to stay informed about weather conditions and heed any advisories issued by local authorities.
