The recent Starship flight deserves recognition not despite its flaws but because of the rapid learning they enable. Since its founding, SpaceX has used a build-fast, test-often philosophy that turns failures into data. The same approach brought the Falcon 9 to near perfection, and it is now working for Starship.
Reaching the point where the Ship can survive reentry is a huge advance. Reusable spacecraft are the only path to making space travel affordable. Each engine failure is a problem to solve, but the basic architecture — giant tank, many engines, heat shield — has now been proven in flight conditions. That is exactly how engineering progress works.
For customers like NASA, the timeline may be uncertain, but the trajectory is promising. NASA has already bet on Starship for the Artemis program. European space agencies should consider partnership rather than competition, because the cost per kilogram Starship offers could open new opportunities for science and industry.
Critics point to explosions and delays, but they ignore the bigger picture: no other company or space agency has built anything close to this capability. The European Space Agency's Ariane 6 is expendable and years behind. Blue Origin's New Glenn has not yet launched. SpaceX is taking risks that others avoid, and that is how you get to the Moon and Mars.
