Deutsche Bahn (DB) has reported a return to operational profitability in the 2025 financial year, signaling progress in its ongoing restructuring efforts. The company achieved an adjusted operating profit (EBIT) of €297 million, a significant turnaround from the €333 million loss recorded in 2024. This improvement was accompanied by a 3% increase in revenues, reaching approximately €27 billion.

Despite these positive developments, DB faced a net loss of €2.3 billion from continuing operations, primarily due to a €1.4 billion impairment loss related to DB Long-Distance. This write-down reflects challenges in the infrastructure and market conditions, including prolonged modernization projects and slower-than-expected recovery in punctuality.

The sale of DB Schenker, the company's logistics subsidiary, contributed to a net profit of €5.3 billion for the year. The proceeds from this sale have been utilized to reduce DB's net financial debt by €11.9 billion, bringing it down to approximately €20.7 billion as of December 31, 2025.

Looking ahead, DB has committed to substantial investments in infrastructure, with capital expenditures reaching about €22 billion in 2025, of which €19 billion was allocated to infrastructure alone. The company anticipates further gradual improvements in 2026, forecasting revenues to increase to around €28 billion and operating profit to rise to approximately €600 million.

While these financial strides are commendable, DB continues to grapple with challenges in its freight division, DB Cargo, which reported a downturn in volume sold and revenues in 2025. The company has acknowledged the need for ongoing restructuring in this segment to achieve sustainable profitability.

In summary, Deutsche Bahn's return to operational profitability marks a significant milestone in its recovery journey. However, the company remains vigilant, focusing on infrastructure enhancements and strategic restructuring to address persistent challenges and ensure long-term success.
