Spain has experienced its hottest July on record, with temperatures reaching nearly 45°C and over 300 new temperature records set across the country. This unprecedented heatwave has raised concerns about the impacts of climate change and the country's preparedness for such extreme weather events.
The Spanish Meteorological Agency (AEMET) reported that the average temperature from June 1 to July 15 was 24.5°C, 3.3°C higher than the 1991-2020 reference period. This period was marked by two significant heatwaves that sent temperatures soaring across mainland Spain. AEMET noted that "practically all days in the summer of 2026 have up to now recorded temperatures higher than the normal average in the whole of Spain."
The heatwave has had widespread effects, with the southern and southeastern regions, including cities like Seville and Malaga, experiencing some of the country's hottest conditions. The average temperatures in these areas hovered around 35°C (95°F), and can occasionally climb higher, underlining the region's proximity to the Sahara.
The extreme temperatures have also led to increased energy consumption as residents and businesses rely on air conditioning to cope with the heat. Additionally, the prolonged heat has heightened the risk of wildfires, particularly in the southeastern province of Almeria, where a ferocious blaze resulted in 13 fatalities, marking Spain's deadliest wildfire in recent times.
Looking ahead, experts warn that such extreme heat events may become more frequent due to climate change. This underscores the need for Spain to invest in infrastructure and policies that can mitigate the effects of future heatwaves, protect vulnerable populations, and ensure the resilience of its ecosystems and economy.
