A recent study led by the Vall d'Hebron Institute of Oncology (VHIO) has identified a significant link between the presence of the bacterium Fusobacterium and more aggressive forms of colorectal cancer. Published in the journal ESMO Open, the research suggests that this specific microbe may play a critical role in how tumors grow and respond to treatment. By analyzing 740 patients, researchers found that those with Fusobacterium-positive tumors faced a higher risk of disease recurrence and lower survival rates compared to those without the bacteria.
The findings are part of the FUSOMAP project, a three-year multicenter study involving nine hospitals across seven Spanish autonomous communities. The research highlights that current clinical tools, which rely primarily on traditional factors like tumor stage and grade, may not be sufficient to predict which patients are most likely to suffer a relapse. According to the study, the presence of Fusobacterium can be detected in stool samples even after surgery, serving as a potential indicator of a patient's long-term prognosis.
This discovery is particularly relevant because more than 30% of patients with stage II and III colorectal cancer experience a recurrence despite undergoing surgery and chemotherapy. The data indicates that chemotherapy may be less effective in patients whose tumors harbor this bacterium. By identifying this biological marker, doctors hope to better tailor treatment plans, potentially sparing some patients from unnecessary therapies while offering more intensive monitoring to those at higher risk.
While these results are promising, researchers emphasize that further investigation is needed to confirm the exact mechanisms by which Fusobacterium influences tumor progression. The study opens new doors for personalized medicine, suggesting that future therapies could potentially target the gut microbiota to improve outcomes. For now, experts continue to stress the importance of participating in regular screening programs, as early detection remains the most effective way to combat colorectal cancer.
