Football icon Lionel Messi has donated 80,000 euros to support reconstruction efforts in the Sierra Oeste region of Madrid, which was recently devastated by severe wildfires. The contribution was announced by Isabel Díaz Ayuso, president of the Community of Madrid, who publicly thanked the Argentine athlete on social media for his philanthropic gesture. The donation comes as the region begins to recover from one of its most significant environmental disasters in recent decades.
The wildfires, which burned for nearly two weeks, affected approximately 27,000 hectares and impacted 17 municipalities. The scale of the destruction forced the evacuation or confinement of over 55,000 people. While emergency teams have now brought the flames under control, they continue to monitor hotspots and the perimeter of the affected area, particularly near the San Juan reservoir. Despite the stabilization of the situation, residents in seven residential areas across the towns of Pelayos de la Presa and San Martín de Valdeiglesias remain unable to return to their homes.
Local authorities have established a dedicated platform to manage donations from citizens and businesses to assist with the recovery. This initiative, supported by infrastructure from CaixaBank, aims to channel funds directly into the environmental and economic restoration of the impacted towns. Messi’s donation is expected to bolster these ongoing efforts as the region works to rebuild damaged infrastructure and support displaced families.
Looking ahead, the focus remains on the safe return of evacuated residents and the long-term ecological restoration of the Sierra Oeste. While the immediate danger has passed, the logistical and financial challenges of rebuilding remain substantial. The regional government continues to coordinate with firefighting units and environmental guards to ensure the area is secure before lifting remaining restrictions on roads and residential access.
