France marked the 10th anniversary of the July 14, 2016, terrorist attack in Nice this week with a series of solemn commemorations. The tragedy, which occurred on the Promenade des Anglais during Bastille Day celebrations, resulted in the deaths of 86 people and left 458 others injured. The attacker, Mohamed Lahouaiej-Bouhlel, drove a 19-tonne truck into crowds gathered to watch fireworks, marking one of the deadliest terrorist incidents in modern French history.
To honor the victims, the city of Nice held three days of memorial events starting July 12. These included a silent march led by relatives of the victims, an interfaith ceremony at the Villa Masséna, and a final memorial service presided over by President Emmanuel Macron on July 14. In a gesture of national solidarity, the City of Paris moved its own traditional fireworks display to July 13, ensuring that the anniversary date remained dedicated to reflection and mourning.
The commemorations featured a drone show on the Promenade des Anglais, where 2,016 drones formed the words of the French national motto: liberty, equality, and fraternity. Following this, 86 blue beams of light were projected into the sky as the names of the victims were read aloud. The events were organized in close collaboration with four local victims' associations, which have played a central role in supporting survivors and families over the past decade.
While the attacker was killed by police on the night of the incident, the legal process has continued to address the broader impact of the attack. Eight individuals accused of assisting the perpetrator were convicted in a special terrorism trial in 2022. As the nation reflects on this decade of grief, the focus remains on community resilience and the ongoing support for those still processing the trauma of that night.
