China has taken a significant step in its quest for semiconductor self-sufficiency by initiating mass production of domestic deep ultraviolet (DUV) lithography machines. These machines are crucial for fabricating advanced microchips, marking a substantial advancement in China's semiconductor capabilities.
The DUV lithography machines, essential for producing modern computer chips, were previously dominated by the Dutch company ASML. The Chinese-built machines are expected to be delivered this year to major domestic semiconductor firms such as SMIC, Hua Hong Semiconductor, and CXMT. While these machines reportedly lag behind ASML's in performance and reliability, they still pose a strategic challenge, especially amid growing U.S. export restrictions, which have already barred sales of cutting-edge extreme ultraviolet (EUV) machines to China since 2019 and may extend to DUV systems.
This development is part of China's broader strategy to reduce dependence on foreign technology and bolster its domestic semiconductor industry. The Chinese government has been actively investing in the sector, with plans to inject $70 billion into domestic chip fabrication, aiming to compete with global leaders like Nvidia and other U.S. firms. This initiative is seen as a response to the U.S. government's export controls targeting Chinese access to advanced processors.
The move also comes amid a global surge in demand for semiconductors, driven by the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence (AI) applications. China's chip industry is experiencing strong growth momentum, with executives noting that growth is coming faster than expected this year.
