A major new initiative in the Pyrénées-Orientales region is turning treated wastewater into a vital resource for local farmers. As the area faces persistent drought conditions that have strained agricultural production for years, the Community of Communes Albères-Côte Vermeille-Illibéris has partnered with Veolia to launch a pioneering water reuse facility in Argelès-sur-Mer. This project, which recently began operations, is designed to provide 1.3 million cubic meters of high-quality recycled water annually for agricultural irrigation.

The facility utilizes advanced membrane ultrafiltration technology to treat wastewater to Category A standards, the highest quality level permitted under French regulations. This treated water is primarily directed toward drip irrigation systems for approximately 700 hectares of farmland, with a focus on supporting local fruit orchards. By repurposing water that would otherwise be discharged, the project aims to reduce the heavy reliance on freshwater reserves and drinking water supplies during the peak summer tourist season.

This effort represents a significant shift in regional water management, moving toward a more circular model to combat climate-driven scarcity. The project is the first of its kind to receive support from France's national Agricultural Hydraulics Investment Fund, highlighting its role as a model for other drought-prone territories. Local officials and agricultural stakeholders view the facility as a necessary adaptation to the changing climate, providing a more stable water supply for a sector that is essential to the region's economy.
