A new report from INTERPOL reveals that artificial intelligence is now a central driver in more than half of all cybercrimes reported across Africa. The 2026 assessment, which draws on data from 36 member countries, highlights a major shift in how digital fraud is conducted. Criminal activity has evolved from isolated, opportunistic incidents into a highly organized, borderless ecosystem that operates with machine-like efficiency. Financial losses linked to these activities have more than doubled since 2024, climbing to 484 million dollars.
Criminal networks are increasingly using generative AI to automate every stage of their operations. This includes everything from reconnaissance and phishing to the creation of synthetic identities. By combining real personal data with fabricated elements, attackers can now bypass sophisticated biometric verification systems to open fraudulent bank accounts or secure mobile loans. These synthetic personas are often maintained over time to build credibility before being used for large-scale financial theft.
Beyond identity fraud, the report identifies a surge in sophisticated social engineering. Attackers are deploying AI-generated voice and video clones to impersonate executives or trusted figures, a tactic that has successfully tricked employees into authorizing unauthorized transfers. The scale of these threats is compounded by the rapid digital transformation of the continent, where over 1.1 billion mobile subscriptions were recorded in 2025, often outpacing the security infrastructure and legislative frameworks needed to combat such advanced threats.
Law enforcement agencies face significant hurdles in responding to this new reality. The INTERPOL report notes that 92% of surveyed agencies cite a lack of technical expertise as a primary barrier to effectively countering AI-enabled threats. As criminal groups continue to refine their methods, the gap between the speed of these industrial-scale scams and the capacity of traditional security measures remains a critical vulnerability for both businesses and individuals.
