Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) officially launched its international flight services on July 15, 2026, marking a significant milestone for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The inaugural international flight, operated by Air India Express, departed for Abu Dhabi, establishing a direct link between the new aviation hub and the United Arab Emirates. This development comes less than 200 days after the airport first opened for domestic commercial operations on December 25, 2025.
The airport, owned by Adani Airport Holdings Ltd. (AAHL), has experienced rapid growth since its inception. In its first seven months, NMIA has connected to 46 domestic destinations and served over 2.3 million passengers. Currently, the facility manages approximately 150 air traffic movements daily. The commencement of international flights is expected to further increase this volume as more airlines integrate the airport into their global networks.
Beyond passenger travel, the launch also signals the start of international cargo operations. The inaugural flight carried the airport's first shipment of perishable exports, a move intended to support local agricultural exporters by providing faster access to overseas markets. This dual-focus on passenger and cargo capacity is central to the airport's role in easing the heavy traffic load currently experienced by the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai.
Looking ahead, the airport operator plans to expand its international reach by adding more destinations in the coming weeks. While the initial service to Abu Dhabi will operate on a thrice-weekly basis, the facility is designed to handle 20 million passengers annually in its first phase. As airlines continue to scale their operations, the airport is positioned to become a critical gateway for the region's growing economic and travel demands.
