Government approves major shipbuilding and repair projects in Gujarat

The Indian government has granted in-principle approval to two significant maritime infrastructure projects in Gujarat, aiming to bolster the nation's shipbuilding and repair capabilities. These initiatives include a greenfield shipbuilding cluster in the Porbandar district and a state-of-the-art ship repair facility at Vadinar in the Gulf of Kutch. Both projects fall under the central government's Shipbuilding Development Scheme, which is a core component of the broader Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047 strategy.

The Porbandar shipbuilding cluster will be developed across nearly 2,000 acres at Kuchhadi through the National Shipbuilding and Heavy Industries Park-Gujarat, a special purpose vehicle formed by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways and the Gujarat Maritime Board. This facility is designed to construct large commercial vessels, with an estimated annual production capacity of 1.2 million to 1.5 million gross tonnage. The site will feature modern shipyards, ancillary manufacturing units, and dedicated infrastructure to support heavy-tonnage vessel construction.

Simultaneously, the ₹1,570-crore ship repair facility at Vadinar will be jointly developed by Cochin Shipyard Ltd and the Deendayal Port Authority. This brownfield expansion project includes the construction of a 650-metre jetty, two large floating dry docks, and supporting workshops. Once operational, the facility will be capable of repairing vessels up to 300 metres in length, which is expected to significantly reduce India's reliance on foreign shipyards for the maintenance of large commercial ships.

These projects represent a strategic move to position India as a global hub for maritime manufacturing. By enhancing domestic capacity, the government aims to improve competitiveness and create a more efficient maritime ecosystem. The next steps will involve moving from in-principle approval to detailed project implementation, with stakeholders watching for timelines on construction and the eventual operational impact on the shipping industry.
