Indian stock markets have fallen sharply, losing 2,000 points in the last five trading sessions. The selloff has erased gains built over the past month, raising anxiety among retail investors and traders. The trigger is a combination of global headwinds and domestic earnings that show a patchy recovery.

The backdrop includes rising US interest rates, renewed worries about a global slowdown, and foreign investors pulling money out of emerging markets. Domestic indices have been under pressure from high valuations and profit-taking. The Nifty and Sensex have both corrected more than 5% from recent highs.

Amid the rout, a handful of companies reported strong quarterly numbers. AU Small Finance Bank posted a 37% rise in net profit to ₹796 crore, helped by a 32% jump in net interest income. Lodha Developers saw its net profit double to ₹1,373 crore, driven by strong sales in the luxury housing segment. Paytm's earnings call highlighted key strategic moves, including an AI-as-a-service offering and a bid for a wallet licence.

However, the market's reaction to these results has been muted. Analysts say the broader macro picture is overshadowing individual company performance. The banking sector, in particular, remains under scrutiny over asset quality and margin pressures.

For ordinary investors, the sharp drop means portfolio losses, but it may also present buying opportunities in solid stocks. The coming weeks will be crucial as more companies report and the central bank's monetary policy stance becomes clearer. The Reserve Bank of India is expected to hold rates steady, but its commentary on inflation and growth could set the tone for the next market move.
