In a significant move to uplift the living standards of economically disadvantaged families, the Telangana government has launched an extensive 2BHK housing scheme aimed at providing free accommodation to the state's poor and homeless citizens. This initiative, known as the Double Bedroom Housing Scheme, seeks to enhance the quality of life for socio-economically weaker sections by offering fully constructed homes without any financial burden on the beneficiaries.
Under this ambitious program, eligible families will receive a fully constructed house comprising two bedrooms, a hall, a kitchen, and two toilets, covering an area of 560 square feet. The state government funds the entire project, distinguishing it from housing initiatives in other states that typically offer partial financial assistance or home loan rebates. This comprehensive approach ensures that the beneficiaries are not burdened with any financial obligations, making homeownership a reality for many who have long been deprived of it.
The primary objective of the scheme is to provide quality and respectable housing to the poor. In urban areas like Hyderabad, the plan involves constructing two and three-storied buildings with 2BHK flats, while in rural regions, independent houses are being built. A pilot project was initiated at IDH Colony in Bhoiguda, Secunderabad, where 396 units, each comprising two bedrooms, a hall, and a kitchen, are being constructed in 32 blocks of G+2 on 580 square yards at a cost of Rs 37 crore, with each flat priced at Rs 7.9 lakh.
Applications for the scheme can be submitted online through Mee Seva or its centers. In Hyderabad, slums identified for clearance have been relocated to facilitate construction. In some areas, government-owned land has been identified for building houses. Upon completion, the houses are transferred and registered in the beneficiary's name by the government.
The scheme is open to families belonging to the Below Poverty Line (BPL) category, including Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Minorities. Having a valid Food Security Card is mandatory for applicants. The unit cost for each 2BHK house is Rs.5.04 lakhs in rural areas and Rs.5.30 lakhs in urban areas.
This initiative is part of the government's broader efforts to make the state free of kutcha houses. In May 2026, the Cabinet approved the construction of 2.5 lakh houses under the second phase of the Indiramma scheme, starting June 1, with 2,000 houses allotted to each constituency. Additionally, the government has decided to provide financial support for incomplete homes, offering Rs 2 lakh each for houses where walls are completed but slabs are pending, and Rs 3 lakh each for houses that had reached only the foundation stage during the previous government's tenure.
The Telangana government's commitment to providing free housing to the poor reflects its dedication to social welfare and poverty alleviation. By ensuring that every citizen has access to a dignified living space, the state aims to foster a more equitable and prosperous society.
