In the Surjyapur area of Baruipur, near Kolkata, a tragic incident unfolded involving a 12-year-old schoolgirl. On a Saturday afternoon, the young girl left her home to purchase a birthday gift for a friend but failed to return. Her family, deeply concerned, initiated a search that extended into the night, suspecting foul play. They alleged that four local men had abducted her and expressed frustration over what they perceived as a delayed police response.
The following evening, around 8 pm, the family and local residents discovered CCTV footage from the vicinity. The footage depicted a man wearing a blue cap accompanying the missing girl, providing a crucial lead. Utilizing this information, the community identified the individual and located his residence around 4 am on Sunday. Under pressure, the man allegedly revealed the location where the girl's body was concealed.
Acting on this information, residents recovered the girl's body, found stuffed inside a sack, from a pond near Surjyapur Haat around 9 am on Sunday. The discovery of the body led to widespread protests, with residents blocking the Baruipur–Joynagar Road, burning tires, and vandalizing police vehicles. The situation escalated when an angry crowd allegedly assaulted the man, leading to his death. The incident also sparked a political confrontation, with former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee attempting to visit the victim's family, while delegations from various political parties headed to Baruipur.
In response to the unrest, authorities imposed Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) across the area. Police detained a local BJP worker, Shantanu Mandal, and arrested four individuals in connection with the girl's death. The incident has raised serious concerns about law enforcement's handling of the case and the community's response to such tragedies.
