The Kadapa steel plant in Andhra Pradesh represents a culmination of efforts initiated during the tenure of former Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy. The project's foundation was laid under his leadership, and the groundwork for its establishment was meticulously planned and executed by the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) government.

During his 2022 visit to Davos, Reddy engaged in discussions with Aditya Mittal, CEO of ArcelorMittal, leading to a preliminary understanding to establish a steel plant in Andhra Pradesh. This strategic initiative resulted in the company's agreement to invest 4,800 crore in the Greenko project in Kurnool and the identification of multiple potential locations, including Nakkapalli, for the steel plant.
