In a tragic incident that has shaken the community of Baruipur in West Bengal's South 24 Parganas district, a 12-year-old girl was found dead in a pond on July 5, 2026. The young girl had been missing since the previous afternoon, and her body was discovered the following morning, leading to widespread outrage and protests in the area. The family alleges that she was raped and murdered, prompting swift action from local authorities.

The West Bengal Police have arrested three individuals in connection with the crime. The prime accused, Ananda Sardar, was apprehended on July 6, 2026, in the Baruipur market area. Two other suspects, Pravas Mondal and Dibakar Sardar, were arrested earlier. A six-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been constituted to probe the case thoroughly. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has vowed to ensure justice for the victim's family. Speaking to reporters, he stated, "Capital punishment will be given. Whatever the father has asked for, the CM will ensure it is done. I am happy that they have placed their trust in me." He also mentioned that he would visit Baruipur to meet the girl's father and review the police's handling of the case. The Chief Minister condemned the mob violence that erupted following the incident, describing it as having a "communal angle." He assured that those responsible for the violence would face appropriate consequences.

The incident has also led to political tensions. Former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee participated in a candlelight protest rally in South Kolkata, expressing her condemnation of the crime. She alleged that she was placed under house arrest to prevent her from visiting the victim's family in Baruipur. The state government has imposed prohibitory orders in Baruipur, Sonarpur, and Narendrapur to maintain law and order.
