The recent landslide on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway's 'Missing Link' has raised serious concerns among experts and opposition parties regarding the project's engineering and planning. While the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) attributes the incident to unprecedented monsoon conditions, critics argue that the existing protection measures were insufficient.
The slope above the tunnel had been stabilized using rock bolts, steel mesh, and other rockfall protection measures. However, the boulders that fell originated from nearly 150 meters above the protected portion of the slope, suggesting that the mitigation strategies did not account for such extreme scenarios.
Opposition parties have seized upon the incident to question the government's preparedness and the quality of construction. Maharashtra Congress President Harshvardhan Sapkal remarked, "With the very first rain, the 'Infra Man' has become a 'Disaster Man'!"
This perspective highlights the need for more robust engineering solutions and comprehensive planning to ensure infrastructure resilience against extreme weather events.
