In a significant development in the Baruipur minor rape-murder case, Prabhas Mondal, the prime accused, was killed in a police encounter during a crime scene reconstruction exercise. The incident occurred early on Wednesday morning in Surjyapur, South 24 Parganas district, West Bengal. Mondal, along with co-accused Ananda Sardar, Dibakar Sardar, and Kabir Mollah, was implicated in the brutal rape and murder of an 11-year-old girl whose body was discovered in a pond on July 5. The post-mortem report confirmed sexual assault, and water in her lungs indicated she was alive when thrown into the pond. During the reconstruction, Mondal allegedly snatched a policeman’s service firearm and fired at the police team. In self-defense, the police returned fire, injuring him. He was rushed to Baruipur Hospital, where he was declared dead. Mondal's mother, Sandhya Mondal, refused to claim his body, stating he had received the punishment for his actions. The case has sparked widespread public outrage, leading to protests and violence in the region. The Special Investigation Team (SIT) continues to probe the case, with authorities emphasizing the need for justice and the safety of women and children.
