Shiv Sena corporator Ramesh Mhatre was arrested on July 8, 2026, for allegedly assaulting doctors and hospital staff at Shastri Nagar Hospital in Kalyan, Maharashtra. The incident occurred after doctors advised the family of a newborn to transfer the baby to another facility due to a lack of space in the hospital's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Mhatre, upon learning of the situation, reportedly arrived at the hospital with his supporters and assaulted two doctors, Srishti Bawiskar and Vaibhav Salunkhe, as well as other medical personnel. The assault was captured on CCTV and subsequently went viral on social media, leading to widespread outrage. In response, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) threatened to suspend medical services in the area if immediate action was not taken. The Shiv Sena party distanced itself from Mhatre's actions, initiating internal disciplinary proceedings and making it clear that it would not shield him from legal action. Mhatre has denied the allegations, stating that he did not raise his hand against the female doctor and that the altercation stemmed from the doctor allegedly failing to listen to the grievance and talking on the phone. The incident has sparked a broader discussion on the safety of medical professionals and the need for stringent measures to protect healthcare workers from violence. Authorities have assured that strict action will be taken against those found guilty.
