Jamshedpur FC has officially announced its withdrawal from the Indian Super League (ISL) starting with the 2026-27 season. The decision, confirmed by Jamshedpur Football and Sporting Private Limited, marks the end of the club's nine-year tenure in India's top-tier football competition. The club, which was founded in 2017 and owned by the Tata Group, will cease its senior team operations following the conclusion of the current Durand Cup tournament.
The exit follows the club's failure to meet a critical deadline set by the All India Football Federation (AIFF). Under the league's new club-led commercial framework, all participating teams were required to pay an initial administrative fee of ₹55 lakh by July 20. Although the AIFF granted an extension until July 31, Jamshedpur FC ultimately did not complete the payment, citing the need for internal shareholder approval.
This departure occurs as the ISL undergoes a significant structural transition. With the expiration of the Master Rights Agreement between the AIFF and its former commercial partner, Football Sports Development Limited, the league is shifting toward a model where clubs take greater control of commercial operations. The transition has been marked by uncertainty, including a shortened previous season and a lack of long-term broadcast stability.
Despite the withdrawal of the senior team, the organization has stated it remains committed to the development of football in India. The club plans to continue its focus on grassroots initiatives, youth talent identification, and creating pathways for young players to reach professional levels. The Tata Group’s involvement in football will continue through the Tata Football Academy in Jamshedpur.
The loss of Jamshedpur FC leaves a void in the league, which is now expected to proceed with 13 teams for the upcoming season. Fans and players have expressed shock at the decision, as the club had established itself as a competitive force, winning the League Winners' Shield in the 2021-22 season.
