The Johor state government has requested a federal investigation into a tech commune operating within the Forest City development following public concerns over alleged Israeli participation. The commune, known as the Network School, is a co-living and co-learning space for tech founders and remote workers. Allegations circulating on social media suggest that Israeli nationals may have entered Malaysia to participate in the program by using passports from other countries, bypassing Malaysia's long-standing policy that bars Israeli passport holders from entry.
Johor Chief Minister Onn Hafiz Ghazi stated that the state government takes these allegations seriously and will not permit Johor to be used as a base for activities that conflict with national law or sovereignty. He has called on the Home Ministry, the police, the Immigration Department, and other security agencies to conduct a thorough review. The investigation aims to verify the identities and nationalities of participants, the validity of their travel documents, and whether their stated reasons for entering the country align with their actual activities.
Beyond immigration concerns, state and federal regulators are reviewing the commune's operational status. Agencies including the Ministry of Higher Education and the Digital Ministry are assessing whether the school’s programs require specific registration or approval under Malaysian law. Local authorities, such as the Iskandar Puteri City Council, are also auditing the facility to ensure compliance with building use, land conditions, and business licensing requirements.
The Home Ministry has confirmed that investigations are underway and has warned that it will take firm action without compromise if any violations are discovered. This includes potential misuse of immigration passes or activities that threaten national security. The government has urged the public to avoid speculation while the authorities carry out their review to ensure that all operations within the country remain consistent with legal and national interests.
