Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has defended the Retirement Fund Incorporated (KWAP) following a reported RM200 million loss from its investment in the Indonesian aquaculture startup eFishery. Addressing concerns regarding the fund's venture capital activities, Anwar emphasized that the loss must be viewed within the context of the organization's broader financial performance, which saw a net profit of RM12.9 billion for the year. He noted that while any loss is regrettable, the overall health of the fund remains robust.

KWAP, which manages the pension funds for Malaysian public servants, has increasingly diversified its portfolio into private equity and venture capital to seek higher returns. The investment in eFishery was part of this strategy to tap into the growing digital economy in Southeast Asia. However, the startup faced market headwinds that impacted its valuation, leading to the write-down of the investment.

During his remarks, the Prime Minister highlighted that the incident serves as a valuable lesson for state-linked investment firms. He specifically pointed to the need for greater due diligence and a reduced reliance on external audit firms when assessing the viability of high-risk ventures. The government intends to ensure that such investment bodies maintain a balance between pursuing growth and safeguarding the retirement savings of civil servants.

Moving forward, the focus for KWAP will be on refining its risk management frameworks. While the fund continues to generate significant returns, the public and policymakers are expected to keep a close watch on how these investment decisions are made. The government has signaled that it will continue to support the fund's mandate while demanding higher standards of accountability for all future capital allocations.
