Malaysia's Waste-to-Energy Initiative: Transforming Trash into Power

Malaysia is taking significant steps to address its growing waste management challenges by investing in waste-to-energy (WtE) technology. The WtE 1 Plant in Jeram, Kuala Selangor, which began operations in May 2026, processes up to 1,700 tonnes of solid waste daily, generating 26 megawatts (MW) of electricity.

This facility is part of Malaysia's broader plan to develop 18 WtE plants nationwide by 2040, aiming to divert up to 85% of solid waste from landfills and produce up to 600 MW of electricity.

The WtE process involves incinerating waste at high temperatures to generate energy, reducing reliance on landfills and decreasing greenhouse gas emissions. The Jeram plant serves six local authorities, including Shah Alam and Petaling Jaya, and is expected to process a significant portion of Selangor's daily waste.

Selangor's Mentri Besar, Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, emphasized the importance of strict oversight for these facilities. The WtE 1 plant operates under live monitoring by the Department of Environment (DOE), ensuring compliance with environmental standards. Data from the plant is made publicly available to maintain transparency.

While the WtE initiative offers a sustainable solution to waste management, it has raised environmental concerns. Activists and residents have expressed worries about potential health risks and pollution associated with incineration processes. The government is addressing these concerns by implementing stringent regulations and monitoring systems to ensure environmental safety.

Looking ahead, Malaysia plans to expand its WtE infrastructure, with the Ministry of Housing and Local Government targeting up to 18 WtE plants across Peninsular Malaysia by 2050. This expansion aims to further reduce landfill dependency and increase renewable energy capacity, aligning with the country's commitment to sustainable development.

The success of Malaysia's WtE projects will depend on effective policy support, technological advancements, and ongoing public engagement to balance environmental concerns with the benefits of waste-to-energy solutions.
