A Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) report has uncovered significant governance failures and improper bonus payments within Malaysia's Lembaga Tabung Haji (TH), the national pilgrimage fund. The findings highlight serious mismanagement and financial irregularities that have raised concerns among depositors and the public.
The RCI, established in 2022, investigated TH's operations from 2014 to 2020. The report reveals that TH's previous management engaged in poor accounting practices, masking the fund's true financial position. This included the payment of excessive bonuses to employees between 2010 and 2017, totaling RM2.19 million without proper approval. Such actions not only violated internal policies but also undermined the fund's financial integrity.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim stated that the report was initially withheld to prevent public panic and mass withdrawals, which could have destabilized TH. However, with the institution now under new management led by Tan Sri Abdul Rashid Hussain, the government is prepared to release the report to ensure transparency and accountability. Anwar emphasized that the public deserves to know the truth about the fund's past mismanagement.
The RCI's findings have prompted calls for accountability and reforms within TH. Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil and former minister Datuk Seri Dr Mujahid Yusof Rawa have advocated for the report's public release to uphold transparency and allow depositors to understand the issues thoroughly. They believe that disclosing the findings will help restore public trust in TH.
The government's decision to release the RCI report marks a significant step towards addressing the financial mismanagement within TH. It underscores the importance of transparency and accountability in managing public funds, especially those entrusted by millions of Malaysians for their religious obligations. The public and depositors await the full disclosure of the report to understand the extent of the mismanagement and the measures being taken to prevent future occurrences.
