The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has initiated an investigation into the Pilgrims’ Fund Board, known as Tabung Haji (TH), following the release of a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) report that uncovered significant financial mismanagement within the institution. The RCI report, which had been withheld for three years to prevent public panic, was made public recently, revealing a substantial asset-liability gap and questionable asset disposals during the period from 2014 to 2020. The MACC's involvement underscores the government's commitment to addressing corruption and restoring public trust in TH. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim emphasized that the delay in releasing the report was to avoid undermining depositor confidence, which could have led to mass withdrawals and further destabilized the institution. With new management in place, led by chairman Tan Sri Abdul Rashid Hussain, TH has reportedly strengthened its financial position. The public release of the RCI report is seen as a step towards transparency and accountability, allowing Malaysians to understand the extent of the issues and the measures being taken to rectify them. The MACC's investigation is expected to hold accountable those responsible for the mismanagement and to implement reforms to prevent future occurrences.
