DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke Siew Fook has attributed his recent defeat in the Negeri Sembilan state election to a targeted smear campaign. Loke, who had held the Chennah seat since 2013, lost to Barisan Nasional candidate Siow Kong Choon by a margin of 688 votes. This loss marks a significant electoral setback for the DAP leader, who has maintained a consistent winning record over his 22-year political career.
During a press conference at the DAP headquarters, Loke described the contest as the most challenging he has faced. He pointed to a series of unfounded allegations circulated in local villages during the campaign period. These claims included suggestions that he intended to seize power from the Malay establishment, interfere with traditional adat systems, and undermine royal institutions. Furthermore, opponents spread rumors that he would be appointed as the state’s menteri besar if his coalition won, a claim Loke dismissed as constitutionally impossible given that the position is reserved for a Malay Muslim assemblyman.
Loke noted that he personally encountered voters who had been influenced by these narratives, which he believes fostered negative sentiment within the Malay community. Despite the loss, Loke stated he has no regrets about contesting the seat, emphasizing that he chose to face the challenge directly. Following the results, Loke has indicated he is considering stepping down from his position as the Negeri Sembilan DAP chairman and will consult with party leadership regarding his future role within the organization.
