The Kuala Lumpur High Court has officially begun hearing a civil lawsuit filed by 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) and four of its subsidiaries against former Prime Minister Najib Razak and seven others. The plaintiffs are seeking to recover US$5.64 billion, which they allege was misappropriated from the sovereign wealth fund during Najib’s tenure. This legal action, initiated in May 2021, represents a significant chapter in the ongoing efforts to hold high-ranking officials accountable for the massive financial scandal that surfaced nearly a decade ago.

During the opening statement, lead counsel Lim Chee Wee argued that Najib stood at the center of the alleged fraud. The plaintiffs contend that Najib utilized his dual roles as Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, along with his position as the sole shareholder of 1MDB, to exert undue influence over the fund’s board of directors. According to the legal team, this power was used to fast-track abnormal transactions that ultimately enriched Najib, his family members, and his associates, including businessman Low Taek Jho, also known as Jho Low.

The court heard that the alleged scheme involved a series of complex financial maneuvers designed to siphon funds under the guise of legitimate investments. The plaintiffs plan to present extensive documentary evidence and witness testimony, including insights from financial investigators, to substantiate their claims of negligence, fraud, and breach of trust. The legal team emphasized that these actions were a direct betrayal of public trust and caused severe financial damage to the nation.

As the trial proceeds, the court will examine the specific mechanisms through which the funds were allegedly diverted. The outcome of this civil suit could have major implications for the recovery of assets linked to the 1MDB scandal. For the general public, this case serves as a critical test of the judicial system's ability to address high-level corruption and recover state losses. The proceedings are expected to continue with further witness testimonies in the coming weeks.
