Malaysia is setting its sights on becoming a premier regional hub for herbal innovation, with government projections suggesting the sector could generate between RM30 billion and RM50 billion in economic value over the next decade. Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr. Dzulkefly Ahmad announced the initiative following the inaugural meeting of the newly formed National Herbal Development Council. The strategy aims to transform Malaysia from a traditional producer of herbal goods into a high-tech center for bioherbal research and export-oriented production.
To achieve this, the government plans to integrate the country’s established leadership in the global halal market with advanced biotechnology. By leveraging Malaysia’s status as one of the world’s 17 megadiverse nations—home to approximately 1,200 medicinal plant species in Peninsular Malaysia alone—the initiative seeks to bridge the gap between natural resources and scientific innovation. The plan emphasizes evidence-based herbal medicine, clinical validation, and the use of artificial intelligence to accelerate phytochemical discoveries.
Key to this transformation is a whole-of-government approach that involves collaboration between public agencies, universities, and private industry players. The council aims to streamline regulatory pathways and reduce bureaucratic hurdles, ensuring that local herbal products meet rigorous international standards. By focusing on genomic research and intellectual property protection, Malaysia hopes to create a sustainable value chain that appeals to both domestic and international markets.
