Mass Rapid Transit Corporation (MRT Corp) has officially awarded a RM3.03 billion contract for the systems work package of the Penang Mutiara Light Rail Transit (LRT) project. The contract was secured by a joint venture between Malaysian Resources Corporation Berhad (MRCB) and Theta Edge. This development marks a significant step forward in the infrastructure expansion plans for Penang, aimed at addressing long-standing traffic congestion issues on the island.
The systems package is a critical component of the LRT project, covering the design, supply, installation, testing, and commissioning of essential rail systems. These include signaling, telecommunications, power supply, and automated train control systems. By finalizing this contract, MRT Corp is moving the project into its active implementation phase, signaling to investors and the public that the timeline for the rail network is gaining momentum.
MRCB and Theta Edge were selected following a competitive tender process. The joint venture brings together MRCB’s extensive experience in large-scale construction and transit-oriented development with Theta Edge’s expertise in telecommunications and digital systems. This combination is intended to ensure that the LRT operates with modern, efficient, and reliable technology once completed.
For the residents of Penang, the project represents a major shift in public transportation policy. The state government has long advocated for an integrated rail system to reduce reliance on private vehicles and improve connectivity between the mainland and the island. The project is expected to create jobs and stimulate local economic activity during the construction phase.
Looking ahead, the focus will shift to the physical construction of tracks and stations, alongside the integration of these new systems. While the contract award provides a clear roadmap for the technical side of the project, the public will be watching closely for updates on construction timelines and potential disruptions to daily traffic as work begins on the ground.
