Sport Singapore has announced its largest-ever cohort of supported athletes, marking a significant expansion of the nation's high-performance sports pipeline. A total of 247 athletes have been inducted into the Sport Excellence Scholarship (spexScholarship) and Sport Excellence Potential (spexPotential) programmes, receiving enhanced financial and developmental support. This move is designed to strengthen Singapore's competitive edge as the country prepares to host the 2029 SEA Games and ASEAN Para Games.
The spexScholarship programme, which serves as the highest tier of support for athletes competing at Asian and world levels, welcomed 22 new inductees, bringing the total to 107 athletes across 30 sports. Simultaneously, the spexPotential programme, which focuses on preparing promising talent for regional success, saw its largest intake to date with 87 new members, totaling 140 athletes across 31 sports. These programmes provide essential resources including monthly stipends, training allowances, and access to sports science and medicine.
Beyond direct athlete support, the initiative includes a broader strategy to bolster the country's sporting infrastructure. Sport Singapore plans to increase the High Performance Sport Institute’s specialist workforce by approximately 40 percent, reaching 110 specialists. Additionally, the newly formed entity SpexSG will consolidate key sport-related agencies to provide more integrated, athlete-centric support, ranging from career planning to education flexibility.
For the athletes, this support is transformative, allowing many to transition into full-time training without the burden of self-funding. By reducing financial stress, the programmes enable athletes to focus entirely on their performance and long-term development. As Singapore looks toward the 2029 home Games, these expanded cohorts represent a strategic investment in building depth across a wider range of sports, ensuring the nation is well-positioned for podium success on home soil.
