Chief Justice Sundaresh Menon will retire on February 26, 2027, concluding a tenure of more than 14 years as the head of Singapore's judiciary. The Prime Minister's Office announced on July 17, 2026, that Justice Sushil Sukumaran Nair, currently a Justice of the Court of Appeal, has been appointed to succeed him as the nation's fifth Chief Justice. This transition marks a significant change in the leadership of the Supreme Court, which has undergone extensive modernization under Chief Justice Menon's guidance.
Appointed in 2012, Chief Justice Menon is credited with strengthening the institutional foundations of the legal system. His leadership saw the implementation of major reforms, including the digital transformation of court processes and the establishment of the Appellate Division of the High Court to improve the efficiency of legal appeals. He also played a pivotal role in developing the Singapore International Commercial Court, which has helped cement the nation's status as a global hub for dispute resolution.
Beyond administrative and structural changes, the judiciary under Chief Justice Menon adopted a therapeutic justice approach in Family and Youth Courts. This method focuses on addressing the underlying causes of conflict by integrating multidisciplinary teams of judges and counselors. Furthermore, he established the Singapore Judicial College to prioritize continuous learning and professional development for the legal fraternity.
Justice Sushil Nair, the incoming Chief Justice, brings extensive experience to the role. Having joined the Bench as a Judicial Commissioner in 2025, he was appointed as a High Court Judge in March 2026 and elevated to the Court of Appeal in June 2026. His career includes decades of legal practice, during which he gained expertise in complex commercial litigation. Prime Minister Lawrence Wong expressed confidence that Justice Nair will continue to uphold the excellence, integrity, and independence of the judiciary.
