Singapore is set to tighten its demerit points system for motorists, effective January 1, 2027. The threshold for the first suspension will be lowered from 24 to 18 demerit points, meaning drivers who accumulate 18 points within 12 months will face a driving ban. This change aims to enhance road safety by encouraging better driving habits.
The Driver Improvement Points System (DIPS) currently imposes penalties based on the severity of traffic offences, with demerit points assigned accordingly. Accumulating 24 demerit points within 24 months leads to a first suspension, while 12 points within 12 months result in a second suspension. The upcoming adjustment will reduce the first suspension threshold to 18 points within 12 months.
This policy change is part of a broader effort to improve road safety in Singapore. In December 2025, the Ministry of Home Affairs announced increased penalties for speeding offences, including higher demerit points and composition sums, to deter speeding-related accidents.
The revised demerit points system is expected to affect all drivers, particularly those with a history of traffic violations. Motorists are advised to adhere strictly to traffic regulations to avoid accumulating demerit points. The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has emphasized the importance of responsible driving and will continue to monitor the impact of these changes on road safety.
