At the 40th anniversary conference of the People's Action Party's (PAP) youth wing, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong emphasized the party's commitment to diversity and inclusivity. Addressing over 1,200 youth activists at the Young PAP YP40 festival, he stated that the PAP does not expect uniformity in thought among its members. "This diversity is essential for the PAP to keep renewing itself and to continue governing well for the longer term," said PM Wong, who also serves as the party's Secretary-General.
PM Wong urged young Singaporeans to "widen the circle" and join the PAP, even if they do not agree with every single issue. He highlighted that the party seeks individuals with different experiences, perspectives, and ideas to help tackle future challenges. "If you care deeply about Singapore and about our future, if you have ideas about how we can make our country better, then come and join the PAP," he encouraged.
Acknowledging the natural instinct for some young people to be drawn to the underdog, PM Wong noted that while the PAP is a large and established party, it still requires fresh ideas and energy to move Singapore forward. He emphasized that Singapore, competing globally against countries with larger populations and resources, will always be the underdog. "Every generation must bring fresh ideas, new energy, and a renewed sense of responsibility to take Singapore forward," he asserted.
PM Wong also addressed the current political climate, noting the prevalence of performative politics and points-scoring over solving serious problems. He stated that the PAP believes in a different kind of politics—one that focuses on bridging divides and solving problems through actions. "We do not believe the answer is to stoke anger, deepen divides, or give in to cynicism," he said.
In conclusion, PM Wong called on young Singaporeans to take action, lead, and not stand on the sidelines. He reminded them that Singapore was built by individuals who refused to give in to cynicism and stepped forward to create opportunities that once seemed impossible. "So I say to everyone, all young Singaporeans, do not lose heart, do not lose faith, do not stand on the sidelines, choose to lead, and choose to take action," he urged.
The event also marked the launch of the PAP's new logo for the youth wing, symbolizing a renewed commitment to engaging young Singaporeans in the nation's political landscape.
