Singapore's public transportation network is set to expand with the addition of four new stations to the Cross Island Line (CRL). This extension aims to enhance connectivity and reduce travel times for commuters in the affected regions.
The CRL, currently under construction, is designed to be Singapore's longest underground Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) line, spanning approximately 70 kilometers upon completion. It will serve key areas including Changi, Pasir Ris, Hougang, Serangoon, Ang Mo Kio, Bukit Timah, Clementi, Jurong East, and Boon Lay. The line is being developed in phases, with the first phase expected to open in 2030.
The four new stations are part of the CRL's Punggol Extension, a 7.3-kilometer segment that will connect Pasir Ris and Punggol. The stations include Pasir Ris, Punggol, Riviera, and Elias. Three of these stations will serve as interchanges with existing MRT lines: Pasir Ris station will link to the East-West Line, Punggol station to the North East Line, and Riviera station to the Punggol LRT Line. This integration is expected to provide better rail connectivity and greater accessibility for residents in eastern Singapore, such as Pasir Ris and Tampines North, as well as those residing in the north-east, such as Punggol and Sengkang.
The construction of the Punggol Extension officially began in October 2023, with the extension slated to open by 2032. Once operational, the extension is anticipated to shorten more than 70,000 daily journeys between Singapore’s north-east and east regions. For instance, residents would be able to travel between Punggol and Pasir Ris in 15 minutes when the extension opens.
This development is part of Singapore's ongoing efforts to enhance its public transportation infrastructure, aiming to provide more efficient and convenient travel options for its residents. The CRL, along with its extensions, is expected to alleviate congestion on existing lines and support the growing transportation needs of the population.
