A fire at Block 309 Clementi Avenue 4 on the night of July 31 has resulted in one fatality and left two firefighters with burn injuries. The Singapore Civil Defence Force was alerted to the blaze at approximately 11:10 p.m., finding the living room of an eighth-floor unit engulfed in flames. Firefighters forced entry into the flat and successfully rescued a resident trapped in the kitchen, though the individual later passed away at Ng Teng Fong General Hospital. About 40 residents were evacuated as a precaution while emergency teams worked to extinguish the fire.
During the firefighting operation, crews encountered a critical equipment failure involving the building's dry rising main. This system, designed to provide water pressure to upper floors, was not in proper working condition, forcing firefighters to manually haul heavy hoses up eight flights of stairs. The Holland-Bukit Panjang Town Council later indicated that a coupling securing a segment of the pipe had become dislodged, leading to reduced water pressure. The system had been serviced and pressure-tested as recently as March 14.
While the fire was contained to the living room and damage to the surrounding area remained limited, the incident has drawn attention to the reliability of essential fire safety infrastructure in older residential blocks. The two injured firefighters were transported to Singapore General Hospital for treatment, with one having since been discharged to recover at home. Local Member of Parliament Sim Ann has been on-site to support affected residents and coordinate assistance for those whose property sustained damage. Investigations into the exact cause of the fire are currently ongoing.
