Devon and Cornwall Police have launched a murder investigation following the death of former Member of Parliament Ann Widdecombe. The 78-year-old politician was found dead at her home in Haytor, on the edge of Dartmoor National Park, on Thursday, July 9. Authorities reported that she had sustained serious injuries, and they believe the attack occurred around 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday. A 28-year-old man was arrested in South Yorkshire on Saturday on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody.
Investigators have stated that there is currently no information to suggest the incident was politically motivated or related to terrorism. An earlier arrest of a 26-year-old man on Friday was dismissed after he was released without charge and eliminated from the inquiry. Police have emphasized that they are not looking for any other suspects in connection with the case and have urged the public to avoid speculation, noting that such rumors are distressing to the victim's family and unhelpful to the ongoing investigation.
Widdecombe served as a Conservative MP from 1987 to 2010 and held various government roles, including prisons minister. After leaving Parliament, she gained broader public recognition as a contestant on reality television programs and later became a spokesperson for the Reform UK party. Her death has prompted tributes from across the political spectrum, with leaders acknowledging her long career in public service.
While the investigation continues, police have maintained a cordon at the property to allow for forensic examination. Officials have received over 120 tips from the public and are working at a significant pace to gather evidence. The incident has raised questions about the safety of public figures, though authorities have stated there is no wider threat to the public at this time.
