Romania Downs Russian Drone in Nato Airspace Amid Escalating Port Attacks

Romania has shot down a Russian drone that entered its national airspace, the country's defence ministry confirmed on Wednesday. This is the third such incident in recent weeks, as Moscow intensifies its strikes on Ukrainian port infrastructure near the Romanian border. The drone, which was likely targeting Ukrainian grain storage facilities on the Danube River, crossed into Romanian territory overnight. Romanian F-16 jets were scrambled, and the drone was intercepted and destroyed before causing any damage. Romania, a Nato member since 2004, has repeatedly condemned the incursions. The alliance has reinforced its eastern flank with additional air policing and surveillance assets. But the repeated violations test the response protocols of the alliance, which must balance deterrence with avoiding direct confrontation with a nuclear-armed Russia. Nato's collective defence clause, Article 5, has not been invoked, as the incidents have not led to casualties or significant damage. However, the pattern of incursions raises concerns about Russia's willingness to respect Nato airspace. The Romanian government said it would continue to defend its borders and has called on Russia to cease the provocations. The attacks on Ukrainian ports have escalated since Russia withdrew from the Black Sea grain deal in July, targeting export routes that are crucial for global food supplies. The downing of the drone highlights the increasing risk of a direct encounter between Nato and Russian forces.
