On July 7, 2026, during a targeted enforcement operation in Houston, an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer fatally shot 52-year-old Mexican national Lorenzo Salgado Araujo. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) stated that Salgado Araujo was not the intended target of the operation but resembled the individual they were seeking. According to DHS, officers initiated a vehicle stop after observing a white van with an individual matching the suspect's description. The agency alleged that Salgado Araujo ignored verbal commands and attempted to ram an ICE vehicle, prompting the officer to fire in self-defense.
Salgado Araujo, a homebuilder with no criminal record, had been living in the U.S. for nearly 35 years and was in the process of obtaining legal status. His family and local officials have called for an independent and transparent investigation into the incident. Notably, the ICE officers involved were not wearing body cameras, as the department had not yet equipped them due to delays linked to government shutdowns.
The shooting has sparked protests in Houston, with hundreds marching through the neighborhood where the incident occurred. Local officials, including Houston Mayor John Whitmire, have offered city police assistance to ongoing investigations by DHS and the FBI. The Harris County District Attorney's Office is conducting its own investigation, while the FBI is controlling evidence access.
The incident has drawn criticism due to the lack of body camera footage—ICE agents involved had not yet been issued the devices, reportedly due to delays linked to past government shutdowns and political disagreements over immigration enforcement funding.
The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) has offered a reward for information from witnesses, as the position of Salgado Araujo's van and ICE vehicles has obstructed security camera footage.
The incident adds to growing criticism of ICE enforcement practices under the Trump administration, during which at least eight people have died in similar incidents.
The Department of Homeland Security has stated that the shooting remains under investigation by its Office of the Inspector General.
