Meta has announced a massive expansion of its Hyperion data center project in Richland Parish, Louisiana, bringing the total planned investment to more than $50 billion. The project has already begun to reshape the local economy in Richland Parish, a rural community of approximately 20,000 residents. Since breaking ground in December 2024, Meta has contracted more than $1.6 billion in work to Louisiana-based businesses. The company also plans to invest over $1 billion in local infrastructure, including upgrades to roads, water systems, and wastewater facilities. These investments are supported by a combination of private capital and state-level tax incentives, including a 20-year sales tax exemption for qualifying data center equipment.
Local officials and community leaders have highlighted the immediate economic benefits of the project. Increased tax revenue from the facility has already enabled the Richland Parish School District to provide significant annual bonuses to teachers, with some reports indicating these payments have increased substantially over the past year. The project is expected to support 7,500 construction jobs at its peak and create approximately 1,000 permanent operational roles once fully functional. Meta expects the facility to be fully operational by 2036, marking a long-term commitment to the region's industrial and technological growth.
